Our Mission

Launched in 2021, Horizons at Cristo Rey is a tuition-free, high quality academic and enrichment program serving K-8 students in North Philadelphia. In its fourth year, Horizons at Cristo Rey now serves 75 young people from across North Philadelphia. Our site will reach maturity in 2028, serving over 130 students and their families.

Each year, Horizons enrolls new rising first grade students who will return every summer through the eighth grade for a six-week academic and enrichment program. Through partnerships with local teachers, licensed counselors and mission-aligned organizations like the Columbia North YMCA, Tioga Hope Park & Garden, Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, ArtWell and STEMSpark, students attend enriching classroom and in-field experiences that promote academic growth, creativity and holistic well-being. Horizons at Cristo Rey is the first affiliate of Horizons National to expand into the school year, offering an after school program where students receive homework support, enjoy a healthy snack and participate in weekly enrichment activities.

At its core, our Horizons model aims to prevent summer learning loss and to provide after-school support and resources for children in our community.

Horizons’ mission aligns with Cristo Rey’s to advance educational equity for students across the City of Philadelphia and prepare them for the future, including admission to high-quality high schools like Cristo Rey Philadelphia.
